Election Day In Several Communities
(WWJ) - Voters in several metro Detroit cities are going to the polls Tuesday, mostly to decide millages and school board elections.
A big decision awaiting voters in Romulus.
WWJ's Ron Dewey reports that Romulus schools are hoping the third time will be the charm for a 13-mill renewal question that's been turned down twice already. The $9.5 million raised from this millage is one-third of the district's budget that can make or break their operation.
The renewal tax does not apply to principal residences, just non-homestead properties.
Voters in the River Rouge, Clawson and Northville school districts also have money issues on their ballots today.
In Hazel Park, voters will go to the polls to decide whether they want to pay more taxes, or see a longer response time from police and fire. The city manager says if the tax increase is not approved, he'll have to cut staff in the police and fire departments by about half.
Some residents like Nettie Schurg say city services have been cut enough.
"I got kids in high school in Hazel Park, where they don't have textbooks because they copy out of textbooks because they're shaving the budget for not having textbooks to take home," Schurg told WWJ Newsradio 950.
Schurg also says she's upset that the city has eliminated leaf pickup and cut it's local government offices to four days a week.
In Harper Woods, voters will decide whether to amend the city charter that would lead to a merger of its police and fire departments.
Voters in Southfield are also deciding whether or not to approve a millage increase. City officials say if the increase is not approved, more than half of the police and fire department will be laid off.
