Election Day In Metro Detroit: What's On The Ballot

DETROIT (WWJ) - Tuesday is election day in Michigan and the ballots are full of issues, from the governor's race and a seat in the U.S. Senate to marijuana legalization and tax hikes for road repairs.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m.

All eyes will be on the state-wide races, as Republican Gov. Rick Snyder vies for another four years as the governor. His challenger is Democrat Mark Schauer, a former congressman and state lawmaker from Battle Creek.

Voters will elect a new junior senator to serve alongside Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow, who is in her third term. Former Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land, the GOP's nominee from Byron Center, faces Gary Peters, a Democratic congressman from Oakland County. Voters will also send at least four new faces to the U.S. House, thanks to open seats.

Wayne County voters will be electing a new county executive after Bob Ficano lost in the primary. Former Sheriff Warren Evans is facing John Dalton of Livonia.

Marijuana possession proposals are on the general election ballots in nearly a dozen Michigan communities, including Berkley, Huntington Woods, Pleasant Ridge, Mount Pleasant and East Lansing. Most proposals call for the legalization or decriminalization of small amounts of marijuana for personal use.

Road funding issues are at stake in several cities, including Southfield, Farmington Hills, Royal Oak, Fraser, Harrison Township, St. Clair Shores, Melvindale and Memphis.

Voters in Clinton Township, Fraser, Utica, Romeo, Warren, Dearborn, Allen Park, Riverview, Flat Rock and Southgate will decide on tax increases to fund improvements at local schools; while voters in Redford Township, Bloomfield Township and Northville will be asked to approve increases to pay for library operations.

Voters in several communities will decided on increased funding for police and fire departments, including Rochester Hills, Armada, Pleasant Ridge, Washington Township and Oxford.
