Elderly Woman Dies After Being Run Over By Own Vehicle
BERLIN TWP. (WWJ/AP) - Authorities say an 88-year-old woman has died after being inadvertently run over by her own vehicle while in the driveway of her southeast Michigan home.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Department said the accident happened around 5 p.m. Wednesday at a home in the 8400 block of Chinavare Road in Berlin Township.
Investigators said Virginia A. Masserant turned off the ignition of her vehicle, but apparently left the transmission in drive when she went to retrieve her mail. The vehicle then rolled backward down a slope, pinning her underneath it, according to police.
Masserant was pronounced dead at the scene, about 30 miles southwest of Detroit.
Police said the death remains under investigation and urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact them at 734-240-7715.
