Elderly Hamtramck Woman Fires Shots At Police
HAMTRAMCK (WWJ/AP) - A Hamtramck woman is hospitalized following a six-hour armed standoff with police at her home.
Hamtramck police said the woman, who is in her 80's, barricaded herself in the house late Tuesday night after firing shots as officers went to check on her welfare.
It happened at the Hamtramck Colonial Housing Projects near Grandhaven St. just north of Circle Dr.
Hamtramck police Chief Maxwell Garbarino said officers "were trying to get her out safely" but "couldn't even get in the door."
The woman eventually surrendered peacefully at around 5 a.m. and was taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital for observation. A .22-caliber rifle was found inside the home.
Garbarino commended his officers on their professionalism during the standoff.
No injuries were reported. The woman's name has not been released.
