Elderly Detroit Man Sentenced To 10-20 Years For Dismemberment
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A 73-year-old Detroit man has been sentenced to 10 to 20 years in prison in the dismemberment of a still-unidentified woman whose remains were found in his bathtub.
Alphonso Jackson was sentenced Wednesday in Wayne County Circuit Court. He pleaded guilty earlier this month to second-degree murder, concealing the death of an individual and tampering with evidence.
Jackson accepted a deal to avoid a possible life sentence -- although because of his old age, he could likely die behind bars.
Jackson, disabled man who uses a wheelchair, told a judge the woman died of an overdose. Defense lawyer Donald Cook said Jackson provided money to the woman for drugs, panicked after she died and tried to hide the body.
Jackson was arrested May 3, 2013 after police followed a trail of blood at an east side senior living complex -- from a sidewalk, to the lobby, to an elevator, to Jackson's apartment -- where the woman's remains were found in a bathtub. Additional remains of the unidentified woman were found blocks away near a burned-out house.
