Egg Recall So Far Not Affecting Michigan
UPDATE - 8/24 6:20 pm: The Michigan Department of Agriculture says some of the eggs associated with a nationwide recall have made their way to the state. MORE ON THIS
Eggs purchased in Michigan are safe to eat, according to the state health department. Michigan officials say the state does not appear to be involved in a recall of tainted eggs affecting several other states.
The state Department of Community Health and Department of Agriculture said Tuesday they haven't received reports of tainted eggs, but they're continuing to monitor the situation.
More than a half-billion eggs have been recalled in the nationwide investigation of a salmonella outbreak that last week expanded to include a second Iowa farm. The outbreak has sickened more than 1,000 people, and the toll of illnesses is expected to increase.
Iowa's Hillandale Farms and Wright County Egg are recalling eggs.
One of Michigan's largest egg producers is Herbuck Poultry Ranch, located between Lansing and Grand Rapids.
Owner Stephen Herbruck tells WWJ that since the affected eggs come from farms in Iowa, we won't likely see them here.
"Michigan actually produces a surplus of eggs. So, if there's any extra ones in Michigan they would tend to go outside the state," Herbruck said.
Herbruck said they take every precaution to avoid salmonella, but there are things you can do, too.
"Wash your hands before you are preparing food; clean work surfaces. refrigerate your eggs when you get them home, because they are refrigerated totally up until the time you get them," he said.
Herbruck Ranch sells more than 2 Billion eggs a year.
