Effort Underway To Recall Mayor Of Pontiac
PONTIAC (WWJ/AP) - The mayor of Pontiac may find himself fighting to keep his job. As WWJ's Rob Sanford reports, organizers are getting the go ahead to launch a recall.
The recall is being led by Pontiac resident Quincy Stewart, who claims that Mayor Leon Jukowski is guilty of a conflict of interest. Jukowski is not only the mayor of the city, but also serves as a consultant for the emergency manager, Louis Schimmel.
Jukowski, who has been under the auspices of an emergency manager since he was elected in 2009, said it's "disappointing to waste energy on this." He said he's surprised that the recall effort hasn't taken place earlier.
The recall petition language was approved Tuesday. In order to put the issue on the November ballot, 3,237 signatures will have to be collected and certified within 180 days.
