Halloween is a time for children to live through their imagination, become a new character, and run door to door to get some sweet treats. Every parent loves to see their child having fun during the holidays, however sometimes we are so focused on what needs to get done for school, catechism, sports, or other activities that we forget to just let them enjoy and play. This Halloween let's keep the focus on kids by creating a family tradition that is both fun and healthy. Okay, so maybe candy's not healthy, but this is one of the few days a year where it's okay to eat it.

Here are some of the tips I swear by to keep my kids safe and happy on Halloween. What are yours?

  • Keep your porch light on for trick or treaters. Make your entryway welcoming and festive.
  • A teal pumpkin means that house is safe for kids with food allergies. If you would like to offer non-food items like small toys, put out a teal pumpkin!
  • Encourage your child to be creative with costume ideas -- and make the costumes yourselves!
  • Carry a flashlight! It's getting darker sooner, be prepared by carrying a flashlight.
  • Wear costumes that make it easy to spot your child in the dark. Reflective tape does the trick!
  • Examine all candy your child receives for tampering!
