Drug House Bust Yields Over 100 Pot Plants
DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police stumbled onto a major marijuana growing operation Thursday afternoon on the city's west side.
The Detroit Police Gang Squad was patrolling an area near a school near Linwood at the Lodge when they spotted a man walking, acting suspicious.
Police said, when the man took off running, they chased him to a home on Wildemere.
Inside, Detroit Police Inspector Don Johnson said officers discovered a major marijuana growing operation.
"In addition to finding the hundred-plus plants inside this location, they also found a significant amount of heroin as well as a significant amount of cocaine," said Johnson.
Johnson said the drugs' street value totaled an estimated $150,000.
WWJ Newsradio 950's Staphanie Davis was among reporters who got a look inside the house.
"It was well-organized with special lighting, separate rooms for plants in different stages, and I also spotted a book called 'The Cannabis Breeder's Bible,'" Davis said.
Johnson said neighbors on the block had to have known what was going on.
"I've had several individuals walk up and down the street as our officers are here, just trying to see what we're doing, and they know that his house is here," said Johnson. "You know, we need that community involvement from the get-go so we can get rid of this stuff off the street."
Johnson said they had been patrolling the area due to a recent rash of shootings. The house itself is listed as stealing electricity.
The suspect was arrested. His name was not immediately released.
