DPS Rescinds Teacher Layoffs

It's a big sigh of relief for nearly 2,000 teachers in the Detroit Public School district. Most of those who had received layoff notices are coming back.

Nearly forty-percent of the district's teachers were sent layoff notices in April. The reasons given were the budget deficit and reduced enrollment.

But after looking at the finances, and a meeting with emergency financial manager Robert Bobb, Keith Johnson of the Detroit Federation of Teachers said he got the good news.

"He informed me that he was ordering that all of the layoffs to be rescinded. And, even with that, we're still likely to end up with a teacher shortage," Johnson said.

"It's a good day for Detroit Public Schools, especially to our community, so that they will know that when their child returns to school on September 7th, that their classroom will be equipped with a teacher, along with everything else," he said.

Notifications are being sent out this week to teachers this week.
