Crime Down On DPS Campuses
DETROIT (WWJ) - The Detroit Public School year will kick off with some good news: overall crime was down last year on DPS campuses.
Just, why is crime down? It appears to coincide with an increase in parental involvement. The district says surveys show parent engagement last year was up about 30 percent. More than 4,800 parents also attended workshops and participated in fund raisers last year.
Detroit Public Schools Emergency Financial Manager Roy S. Roberts said, "Against a backdrop of increasingly safe and conducive learning environments, and with strong parental involvement moving in the right direction, there's a bright future for continued academic gains for our city's school children to follow."
The numbers also show that there were 120 fewer reported incidents in 2011-2012 than the previous school year. Overall, burglaries and robberies were down, while felonious assaults also dropped. Reports of concealed weapons and arsons plummeted, as well. But, there were 13 more criminal sexual conduct cases reported.
