DPS Loses $4.2M In State Aid For Bad Attendance
DETROIT (WWJ) - The Detroit Public Schools district has lost millions of dollars in state aid after attendance fell below 75 percent on 10 days during the 2010-11 school year.
WWJ's Rob Sanford reports it all figures out to a loss of $4.2 million over the next four years.
State law requires all districts to have at least 75 percent of students in attendance to receive their full per-pupil allocation for the day.
Officials with the state Department of Education examined 19 days when attendance fell below the minimum threshold of 75 percent, including Dec. 13, 2010, when 75,874 students were enrolled but only 20,109 showed up, the Detroit News reported.
Of the 19 days in question, 10 days were identified as below 75 percent, resulting in a deduction of $4.28 million.
The funding loss wasn't as dire as initially expected, with several reports saying the district could have faced a $25.9 million reduction in state aid.
