DPS Fall Enrollment Up
DETROIT (WWJ) - Great news for Detroit Public Schools - they have exceeded their Fall enrollment. Detroit Public Schools spokesperson Steve Wasko says enrollment is up by 137 students, exceeding their goal.
Close to 66,000 K-12 students are enrolled and Wasko says this is great news because since 2006 enrollment has declined. "But this actually records the smallest loss both on a percentage basis and on a real number basis since that time. So we do believe that we're turning the corner based on the leadership that we have, the programming that's going in, the solid start to the school year that we had as well," he says. And Wasko adds, "Certainly meeting the budget target for Detroit or for any school district insures that programs that are in place can continue, that there don't need to be any further layoffs or any other changes to personnel."
Also, Wasko says numbers can still increase a bit during the remaining 20-day period allowed for counting students absent, but excused, on Count Day.
