DPS Enrollment Showing Signs Of Improvement
DETROIT (WWJ) - Monday marks the final day for open enrollment at Detroit Public Schools. The district is giving prospective parents and students a day long sales pitch to try to boost enrollment for the upcoming school year.
According to DPS Spokesman Steve Wasko, early indications show that enrollment is going well thus far.
"In every parent resource center that I've visited, I could visibly see those bubble sheets that are filled out by parents that were on the counter filled out and turned in," Wasko said.
Detroit Collegiate Prep Academy is one of the schools that has experienced early enrollment success as 100 percent of their 9th graders are returning for their sophomore year.
"I would attribute it to our nagging and nurturing," said Principle Ricardo Martin.
Parent Crystal Wells said her child is returning to the academy because of the success she has experienced during her freshman year. "She's really having a good 9th grade year, so why not continue on with what's working?" said Wells.
Despite the early signs of success, the number of students in the district is still expected to see a drastic drop from 66,000 to 55,000 in the fall.
