DPS: District Will Run Out Of Money For Teachers By June 30
DETROIT (WWJ) -- The transition manager for Detroit Public Schools says the district will have no money to continue paying teachers this summer without further funding from the state.
Former bankruptcy Judge Steven Rhodes says the $48.7 million supplemental funding recently passed by state lawmakers will only provide enough cash for DPS to pay employees through the end of the fiscal year on June 30, according to the Detroit Free Press.
In March, Governor Rick Snyder signed into law the emergency funding to keep the district in operation through the end of the school year as the state legislature considers a $720 million restructuring plan.
Meantime, interim union president Ivy Bailey said members were recently told this wasn't an issue and after hearing the news is "outraged."
The 46,000-student district has been under state financial management since 2009.
