DPS Budget Goes Online

DETROIT (WWJ) - The Detroit Public School district's much-anticipated budget is expected to be posted online Thursday. Once the draft budget hits the DPS website, it should give a better idea as to where the district's finances really stand.

Declining enrollment has put Detroit Public Schools in a bind to erase its $327 million deficit. Up to now, they have not disclosed their plans after submitting their draft budget to the state in May. Emergency Financial Manager Roy Roberts will issue $200 million in stabilization bonds to erase part of the deficit.

The Detroit Free Press' Rochelle Riley reports in the paper's Thursday edition that EFM Roberts keys to success include reducing jobs to a number the district can afford, cutting top administration from 30 positions to seven, retaining over 4000 teaching positions, along with a plan to cancel and rebid all DPS contracts.

The district will still need to file a five-year plan to the state on how they will balance the budget by 2016. Details of their budget will be part of a public hearing on Monday with the final version due at the end of this month.
