DPS Budget Calls For Nearly 1,900 Job Cuts, Pay Cut
DETROIT (WWJ) - The budget cutting in the Detroit Public Schools will continue through next year. The latest proposal released by the district show1,889 jobs will be eliminated, and those who still have jobs will have their pay cut by 10 percent.
The proposed budget, which include the closing of nine schools, cuts overall expenditures by $250 million.
Administrators say class sizes for kindergarten through third grade will stay at 25 students per class, but other classes will see an increase of three students per room. Enrollment is projected to be at just about 52,000.
Cuts implemented by Emergency Manager Roy Roberts has led to a projected surplus of nearly $12 million for this school year.
"Detroit Public Schools' proposed 2012-13 school year budget supports a system of schools focused on innovation and robust school choices, data-driven programs to enhance teaching and learning, including new Individual Learning Maps for every child, and highly qualified teachers selected after new teacher evaluation and interviewing processes," said Roberts in a statement.
A public hearing on the spending plan is scheduled for next Wednesday, June 27 at Renaissance High School
