DPS Administrators Move To Save Money
DETROIT (WWJ) - About 600 Detroit Public Schools administrators will move out of their expensive leased office spaces and into district-owned property.
DPS spokesman Steve Wasko told WWJ Newsradio 950 that the move will save the district $1.8 million, still keeping operations, for the most part, in the New Center area.
"From the time that DPS first moved into these offices, there's been a great reduction in the last 10 years in the number of central office administrators and other staff," Wasko said.
"When you walk through the buildings, up to this point in time, you really often times walk by entire rows of empty cubicles until you get to a human being," he said.
Along with saving money, Wasko said the move is expected to improve internal communications.
"It became very difficult, in some cases, just to hold meetings or to have two administrators or staff people work together on a project, often relying on email or other communications as opposed to simply being able to walk down the hallway," Wasko said.
Administrators will use space in the Fisher building along with under-utilized schools and DPS operations in Eastern Market.
The move happening between now and January, is expected to result in a net reduction of 98,400 square feet.
