Dozens Displaced After Plymouth, Hamtramck Fires

PLYMOUTH (WWJ) - Some two dozen residents had to spend the night elsewhere after a fire broke out early Thursday at the Meadows Condominiums near downtown Plymouth. However, fire officials say damage and injury were kept to a minimum.

The fire, which occurred around midnight, damaged only two units on the second and third floors. One woman suffered minor smoke inhalation. A police officer also reportedly injured his hand during dramatic rescues of residents from their balconies. However, as bad as the blaze was, Plymouth Fire Captain Dan Phillips says it could have been worse. "Because of the quick call to 911 by the residents and the quick response by the fire department we were able to put it out with only damage to the two units," says Phillips.

Displaced residents were taken to area hotels for the night by the Salvation Army. There's no word on what may have sparked the flames.

Meanwhile, several families in Hamtramck are left homeless after a fire breaks out at a vacant home in their neighborhood. The flames Wednesday night on Faber Street near Joseph Campau quickly spread to homes on both sides, sending people into the street. No one was hurt, but the homes are a total loss.

Residents say the home between them has been vacant for years and they made repeated requests to the city to tear it down.
