'Doing The Most Good Week' Encourages Random Acts Of Kindness

(WWJ) - It takes only a little effort to do a lot of good. That's the message behind The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit's 6th Annual Doing the Most Good Week (DMG Week) May 9-14.

This annual campaign is centered on recognizing and encouraging past, present and future do-gooders to do something positive for their community.

It's as simple as opening a door for someone, sharing a smile with a stranger, or more involved, such as hosting a food drive at your place of business or worship center or making a donation to help the hungry and homeless The Salvation Army serves.

DMG Week is unique to Metro Detroit, but coincides yearly with the  annual National Salvation Army Week, as designated by President Dwight Eisenhower in 1954.

Individuals are also encouraged to take to social media and share how they are Doing the Most Good by writing on The Salvation Army's Facebook wall or telling @Salmich on Twitter.

There are many ways individuals can engage in DMG Week. You can make a contribution by calling 877-SAL-MICH, visiting salmich.org or sending a check to The Salvation Army at 16130 Northland Drive, Southfield, MI 48075. Just $10 can help feed someone for an entire month.

You can also text 'GOODMICH' to 80888 to make a $10 donation or participate in one of the many events across metro Detroit celebrating DMG Week.

Last year alone, The Salvation Army's many programs worked hard to provide 3,194,802 million meals and 687,203 nights of shelter. Money raised goes directly to the streets to give hope to those who otherwise would have nowhere to turn.

"Doing the Most Good Week is about reminding the community that need exists in metro Detroit 365 days a year. A donation to The Salvation Army is certainly one of the easiest ways to give directly back to your community," Major John Turner, general secretary of The Salvation Army Eastern Michigan Division said in a release.  "No act is too small."

The Salvation Army and other organizations are hosting some fun activities in celebration of DMG Week. On May 10, The Salvation Army's Citadel Band will perform live from noon to 1 p.m. at Campus Martius Park in downtown Detroit.

At the concert, Hershey Dairy will be giving away free scoops of Denali's Original Moose Tracks ice cream, and for every scoop given away, Denali will donate $1 to The Salvation Army.

On May 13, Noodles & Company in Troy (Crooks Road at Big Beaver) is "doing the most good" by donating 25 percent of each customer's bill to The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit. In order to have a portion of their bill donated, diners need to first print off a coupon.

In Touch Credit Union will be holding a "Jeans Day" for employees on May 10. Each employee that makes a donation to The Salvation Army will be given the chance to wear jeans to work.
