Distracted Driving Considered In Deputy Crash

The Macomb County Sheriff's office is investigating whether a deputy was texting or talking on the phone while driving a county prisoner van when he rear-ended a car in Mount Clemens.

Captain Tony Wickersham tells WWJ that deputy James Randlett was bringing the 13 inmates from circuit court when he hit a car.

"Information that was received from the inmates on there is that there's a possibility that he may have been using his cell phone prior to the crash. It's only an allegation at this time, and we are currently investigating that," Wikersham said.

The two in the car as well as seven inmates were taken to a local hospital for some bumps and bruises. The sheriff's office has policies that prohibit using a phone while driving a patrol vehicle.
