Disabled Detroiters Fed Up With Poor Bus Service
DETROIT (WWJ) - Members of "Warriors On Wheels" staged a protest, Wednesday, outside the Detroit Department of Transportation's headquarters on East Warren Avenue.
Metro Detroit chapter president Lisa Franklin says disabled people deserve better service than what they are getting.
"We're here because of the poor transit system here in the city of Detroit and the bus service that we're receiving," Franklin told WWJ Newsradio 950's Florence Walton. "We've got persons with disabilities being denied eligibility, we've got them left stranded on the street."
"We want them to get rid of the old busses, because on the old busses the straps, the securements, don't work. The lifts don't work. We get stranded on the bus and when it happens on those old busses, we're stuck in the back," she said.
Franklin said complaints to Mayor Bing and City Council have resulted in few improvements and she believes Detroit needs to create an Office of Disability Concerns.
