Detroit's Veterans Day Parade To March Down Woodward
DETROIT (WWJ) - The 6th Annual Metropolitan Detroit Veterans Day Parade will take place along Woodward Avenue, beginning at 9:15 on Saturday, Nov. 5.
The parade will start and end at the Vietnam Vets Chapter 9 headquarters, at 2951 Woodward, with a ceremony at 9:15 a.m. Following the ceremony the parade will march down Woodward Avenue to Campus Martius Park, circle the park, and return to Chapter 9's headquarters.
The 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, better known as the Triple Nickel, is among those who will be honored at the parade.
Michael Hunter, chapter president of the Herbert Bridges and Roger Walden Triple Nickel chapter based in Detroit, said they were the first black paratroopers of World War II, similar to the Tuskegee Airmen.
Saturday's parade is also done in honor of the national holiday, Veterans Day, which is November 11. The holiday recognized America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country and willingness to serve. The date is tied to the end of World War I, when fighting between the Allied nations and Germany took effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.
Before the parade, a hot breakfast will be available for $3, and will include eggs, bacon and more. Following the parade, lunch may be purchased for $5 and will include chicken and a couple of side dishes.
The Metro Detroit Veterans Coalition will receive proceeds from the meals.
