Detroit's Hottest Costumes? Think 'Boardwalk Empire'
DETROIT (WWJ) As Halloween draws nearer, everyone has one question: What should I wear?
If you want to fit in, think about Nucky Thompson, Jimmy Darmody and the rest of the crew from HBO's "Boardwalk Empire" -- because flapper chic is where it's at in 2012, according to Patrick Lynch, owner of Lynch's costume shop in Dearborn.
"It's kind of been a '20's (theme), gangster and flapper would probably be what I have sold and rented the most, to be honest with you, it's like throwback stuff," Lynch said.
He's not sure why, but fans of the era are expanding the costumes beyond Halloween parties.
"It seems to be a flapper year, I don't know if it's all for Halloween, there were some flapper and gangster weddings, a flapper birthday party and just today lot of phone calls for even more flappers," Lynch said.
Other top costumes include 1950's themes, and anything to do with the Detroit Tigers, Lynch said. Fans of the '50s are heading out in poodle skirts, diner waitress and sock hop costumes, and crinolines.
After sales slowed down during the Great Recession, he said Halloween is back in 2012 and going strong with costume orders tripled this year over last year.
"So far, my September was a little bit better than last year, my Halloween started off better than expected," he said.
