Detroiters Displaced When Cass Corridor Apartments Suddenly Sold

DETROIT (WWJ) - Dozens of frustrated Detroiters are wondering what they're going to do next after they were kicked out of their Cass Corridor apartment buildings Tuesday morning by a landlord that haven't even met.

Residents of the Berwyn, Claridge and Bretton Hall apartments -- on Henry between Cass and Second -- have been told the buildings have been sold and they have to move out by May 20.

Claridge resident Manson McCann told WWJ Newsradio 950's Mike Campbell he'll miss the place.

"This is probably the best that you can probably get because other than the regular bug problem, it's quiet over here for it to be where it is downtown," McCann said. "The people here are very nice; it doesn't small like urine or anything like that, and for the rate that they paying here, you can't find that anywhere else."

McCann added, "It is a terrible situation, because there are children in these buildings that go to Cass Tech right across the street. There's the elderly that live in my building, personally. And, you know, it's just a sad sight because we're talking about more than 180 units out of three buildings."

There was no immediate word on who bought the buildings or why. There is speculation that, because of the location, the land may become a part of the future plans of the Ilitch family to build an entertainment district in the Cass Corridor.
