Detroiters Injured In Bus Crash On Way To DC For MLK Speech Anniversary
DETROIT (WWJ) - A trip to Washington D.C. to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the historic March on Washington didn't go quite as planned for a group of Detroiters.
A bus carrying members of the Detroit Chapter of the National Action Network was involved in a collision with two other buses.
Police say the accident happened around 7:30 a.m. Saturday on Connecticut Avenue, near the National Zoo.
Violet Ikonomova, former WWJ reporter and producer at our CBS affiliate in Washington, said at least five people were injured in the crash.
"Nobody had any serious injuries, a few of them may have been taken to the hospital but everyone is expected to be OK," she said.
Officials say the bus was one of about 150 headed to the March from the metro Detroit area.
An estimated 100,000 people are expected to crowd Washington D.C. Saturday for the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington where Dr. Martin Luther King delivered his famous "I Have a Dream " speech.
