Detroiters Gravitating Toward Divinity Schools
DETROIT (WWJ) - More and more metro Detroiters are turning to a life where they can serve their communities through church.
Todd Lajiness, Academic Dean at Sacred Heart Major Seminary, said the number of enrollees is on the rise and he attributes this increase to the message being sent by Archbishop Allen Vigneron.
"He has always desired that those who are going to engaged in ministry are trained in a professional way, and as these people come forward expressing an interest, they naturally turn, I think, to the seminary, which is a wonderful resource for formation spiritually, pastorally and intellectually," Lajiness said.
Statistics show that the higher enrollment covers all ages, with the largest increase in the 50-64 year-old age group.
Lajiness is discovering more people who are expressing a generosity of the heart with the desire to serve.
"The service within the church doesn't just kind of happen, but there needs to be formation. There needs to be some intellectual work, some academic work and so they turn to the Seminary for training. And we're very pleased that they're looking toward professional training so that when they engage in a variety of ministries, within local parishes, that they're trained to do that," Lajiness said.
