Detroiter Prays For Nelson Mandela's Recovery
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - In South Africa, a children's choir was among the many who gathered outside the Pretoria hospital where Nelson Mandela is listed in critical condition. The children released 95 white balloons -- in honor of Mandela's 95th birthday next month.
Meantime, a local photographer from Detroit who has traveled the world is reminiscing on her time spent with Mandela.
During her three trips to Africa, Monica Morgan stared at Mandela through the lens of her camera, capturing some remarkable moments.
Mandela, who is 94, was admitted to a hospital in Pretoria on June 8 with what authorities said at the time was a lingering lung infection. South Africans have held prayers nationwide, and many have left flowers and messages of support outside the hospital as well as his home in Johannesburg.
Morgan said she's praying for Mandela as he fights for his life.
"Every time I get a ding on my phone, my heart jumps because I get these alerts from various news sources that talk about things that are going on, and it's hard. I believe that, of course, God has a final say, that he could get better," she told WWJ's Vickie Thomas.
On Thursday, the office of South African President Jacob Zuma said Mandela's health had improved overnight, and that his condition was critical but stable.
