Detroit Woman Critically Injured In Shooting On East Side
DETROIT (WWJ) - A 25-year-old woman is in critical condition after being shot in the chest on Detroit's east side.
The shooting took place Tuesday morning at a home at the corner of Wayburn and Bonita streets, in a neighborhood near I-94 and Whittier Avenue.
Investigators are still on the scene, trying to figure out what led to the shooting. Police say the woman was taken to St. John Hospital by an acquaintance. Her name was not released.
According to police, it appears someone fired several shots into the home from outside. A man at the home returned fire, police said, although it wasn't immediately clear if anyone was injured in the gunfire.
A man who only wanted to be identified as Doc said he's lived in the neighborhood for several years. He heard the gunshots and then went to the scene to see what happened.
"It was just a whole lot of shooting like 'Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom,'" Doc told WWJ's Mike Campbell.
Doc said shootings in his neighborhood aren't unheard of, but they're not exactly common.
"It's crazy around here sometimes but this cuts the cake," he said. "Now, you don't know what's going to happen because, you know, this is the street everybody takes their kids down to school at. You know what I'm saying? Shoot, 13, 14 minutes earlier and the kids would have been out here, you know what I'm saying? Bullets ain't got no name."
Martha Sikes, who has lived in the area for decades, said the level of crime recently has gotten out of control.
"They're breaking in houses around here, coming in on you and everything, robbing the elderly. It's really bad around here now, the crime is really bad," she said.
Police don't yet have a physical description of the gunman, who fled the scene in a 2000 black Oldsmobile.
