Detroit Teens Charged In Burglary, Rape
Three teens have been charged in connection with the burglary and rape of an elderly Detroit woman.
Police say it was a massive show of concern by hundreds of Detroiters that helped police round up three suspects in connection with the beating and sexual assault of a 90-year-old woman in her home and a break-in at another home.
Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee said local residents canvassed Detroit neighborhoods, looking for information about suspects in three recent break-ins.
Godbee shared details on the charges.
"We have three people in custody -- two of which were arraigned yesterday [Sunday] on Home Invasion One and Criminal Sexual Conduct, first degree charges. Also, Intent To Do Great Bodily Harm, against a 90-year-old Leslie resident," Godbee said.
In custody are 18-year old Andrew Hardy and 17-year old Maurice Randall.
The 15-year-old, whose name was not being released, been charged as a juvenile.
The prosecutor is working to try him as an adult.
Nimrod Sherman said that knowing those who may be responsible for the assault on his grandmother is a huge relief, "Because they weren't gonna stop. This couldn't have been their first time... The community involvement -- I can't say enough. It really helped," he said.
Sherman said the attack took a lot out of his grandmother, but she's healing. "She's a fighter," he said.
