Detroit Students Protest Budget Cuts

DETROIT (WWJ) - Dozens of students from Detroit Southeastern High held a demonstration, Friday, over district budget cuts. The students marched along Van Dyke Ave., protesting the elimination of fine arts programs, as a police cruiser followed.

WWJ Newsradio 950's Beth Fisher spoke with students, including LeRoy Lewis, who explained what they're upset about.

"We're protesting about all the cutback and the school closings and the programs that have been cancelled... Like our drama and music program that (district Emergency Financial Manager) Robert Bobb has canceled. And, also, our teachers are getting transferred to other schools," Lewis said.

Governor Rick Snyder's proposed budget is calling for even more cuts to public education. The Detroit Public Schools faces a nearly $3 million deficit.
