Detroit Street Littered With More Than 50 Bullet Casings After Deadly Shootout

DETROIT (WWJ) - One person is dead and another is fighting for his life after a shootout on Detroit's west side that left more than 50 bullet casings in the street.

The incident unfolded around 1:35 a.m. Thursday in the 8900 block of Coyle, near Greenfield and Joy roads.

The victims were found sitting inside a four door sedan that was riddled with bullet holes. The vehicle's back tire was blown out, the windows were shot out and the back seat was covered in blood.

Police say a 21-year-old man was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition. The other victim, a man between the ages of 20 and 25, was declared dead at the scene.

A short way down the block, more than 50 evidence markers were spread about the street and sidewalk -- marking the dozens of spent bullet casings. At least one of the weapons used in the shootout appears to have been an automatic rifle.

At a home just two doors down from where the car ended up, a woman was explaining to police that at least nine of the shots hit her daughter-in-law's home. The family, including a baby, was inside sleeping when the bullets started flying. No one inside the home was injured.

David Dye, who lives in the area, called the shooting a tragedy but said he's thankful there wasn't more carnage.

"I thank God that didn't no kid or nobody else get hurt because these bullets do not have no names on them," he said.

Dye said kids today "just don't get it" anymore. He thinks the shooting wasn't random at all.

"It's all they think about. They walk around with them [guns] and they post them all on the social networks, post them in these videos, glamorize this and it's nothing," he said. "It don't surprise me no more. The way these guys just run around reckless, it does not surprise me."

Reporting live from the scene, WWJ's Mike Campbell said several people were sitting in the back seats of police squad cars, likely talking to detectives. Investigators say they have not yet made any arrests in the case.

An investigation is ongoing.
