Detroit Schools In New Education System To Be Named Soon
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Officials plan to announce next week which Detroit schools will move to a new statewide educational system, come under management of charter operators or close.
Detroit Public Schools emergency manager Roy Roberts and Education Achievement System Chancellor John Covington released a timeline on Wednesday regarding their plans for the district's 2012-13 academic year.
Recommendations for which schools will be in the system will be made Feb. 9 to the Education Achievement Authority board.
The system will assume operation of the five percent of state schools with the lowest academic performance. It starts in Detroit in September and expands later. School control is placed in the hands of principals, teachers and staff.
Separately on Feb. 9, Roberts plans to release a lists of schools planned for consolidation and those that will be turned over to experienced charter operators this fall. All transfers will be based on data-driven decision making.
School-based meetings will be scheduled during February to explain the process and planned changes.
Parents will have the opportunity to register for schools during an annual enrollment period throughout the month of March. Informational events, open houses and parent shoppers' fairs will be held during March.
Roberts said that wrapping up the school assignments for current students early will allow for staffing and budgeting decisions to be made on a timely basis, to ensure a smooth start to the new school year including the placement of a teacher in front of every child on the first day of school.
