Detroit Schools Finalizing Budget Proposal

DETROIT (WWJ) - The Detroit Public School District has until the close of business, Tuesday, to submit a draft budget proposal to Lansing. And Emergency Manager for the district, Roy Roberts, says the deadline has been met.

"We're finalizing today, and we'll use this great technology to transfer it to Lansing, and then we'll get a chance to go and do a deep dive on that and see if any refurbishment is needed, and so we're moving ahead on it," he said.

According to Roberts, this is the "best" spending plan the district has proposed in more than a decade.

"I just have to serve notice publicly, here, we will not cut budgets to get $327 million dollars. What we have to do is stop the bleeding. And we have to make sure that we spend what we get, and not more than (that). And then, over time, you work on the deficit," he said.

Roberts said he intends to "stop the bleeding" by cutting services that are not considered "essential" to the education of students.  The School District has until June 30 to submit a final budget to the state capitol.
