Detroit School Board Votes To Remove Emergency Manager
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Immediate changes aren't expected after the board of the Detroit Public Schools voted to remove the district's state-appointed emergency manager.
Monday's vote was the third time that board members have voted out Jack Martin. A dispute over the state's emergency manager law -- and whether Martin's can remain on the job -- is scheduled to be in court on Wednesday.
Some board members believe Martin's tenure should be ending now, roughly a year-and-a-half after the current emergency manager law took effect.
Attorneys representing Martin have argued that the board is misinterpreting the law. The hearing is set for Ingham County Circuit Court.
The district, which has a deficit of roughly $127 million, has been under emergency management since 2009.
