Detroit River Trip Highlights Treaty
[photogallerylink id=23363 align=left]Native Americans from both sides of the border spent the afternoon canoeing on the Detroit River. The group of 200 took the three-hour journey from Belle Isle to Windsor and back, highlighting a special treaty that allows for such crossings.
WWJ's Mike Campbell spoke with Ellen Wolf, Acting Director of the American Indian Movement, who says the crossing is a part of their heritage.
"It's a part of our culture, and it's the only thing we've got that actually ties us to the pre-division of the land," Wolf said.
Wolf said the "J Treaty" is extremely important to Native American history.
"It's the only unbroken treaty in the history of the countries, either country [U.S. and Canada], anyone on this continent. It's the only one that has never been broken. It's a peaceful treaty," she said.
Friday's event kicks off a weekend Pow Wow scheduled Lincoln Park.
