Detroit Red Wings Notes And Quotes 5-6-11
--Penalty-killing, a season-long issue with the Wings, has cost them in this series. The Sharks went 2 for 4 on the power play in Game 3 and are 4 for 15 in the series, scoring on the man advantage at least once in each game. The Wings have allowed 10 power-play goals on 33 chances in the playoffs (30.3 success rate for opponents). They're allowing entries into the zone too easily and not blocking enough shots.
--Wings coach Mike Babcock challenged his forwards before Game 3, saying he needs to see more out of them. But several still haven't stepped up in this series. The Wings needed bulky forwards Johan Franzen, Todd Bertuzzi and Dan Cleary to play harder against the Sharks' defensemen and wear them down. That trio has combined for no points in three games. Valtteri Filppula also has been held without a point in the series. The Wings are not seeing the depth they spoke of coming into the series.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"It's a tough loss, especially with having the lead late in the third period. We talked about not to back in (the third period) and keep going after them, but they were coming after us with everything they had when they were down a goal." -- Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom.
