Detroit Public Schools Looking For A Few Good Teachers
DETROIT (WWJ) - It's a welcome change of pace for the Detroit Public Schools. Instead of sending out layoff notices, the district is actually looking to hire almost 100 new teachers to fill new positions and fill vacancies caused by retirements and resignations. To help fill the spots, the district is hosting its first ever DPS Teacher Career Fair on Friday, February 7th, from 4 to 6 P.M. at Martin Luther King, Jr. Senior High School, 3200 E. Lafayette Street.
"These are positions that are in especially hard-to-fill positions," said DPS Spokeswoman Michelle Zdrodowski. Applications are being accepted for teaching positions in a number of subject areas, including vocal and instrumental music, part of the district's commitment to restore music and arts programs to all DPS Middle and Elementary Schools.
Applications are being accepted in these fields:
Aircraft
English/English Language Arts
Food Management
Homeroom Teacher
Mathematics
Special Education
Substitute Teacher
Vocal and Instrumental Music
World Languages
Zdrodowski said 72 of the openings are for new positions that have opened up for teachers who will be doing individual and small group learning with DPS students. What does this all mean for the Detroit Public Schools?
"I think it says that Detroit Public Schools is not the DPS of the past. It's the Detroit Public Schools of the future," said Zdrodowksi. "We are focused on providing the best educational product that we can for our kids. And we know that in order to have a healthy city we have to have a healthy school district. And we can't do that without highly qualified, dedicated teachers."
Candidates interested in applying for the open positions must apply on the district's website before attending the career fair.
