Detroit Prepares To Light Official Christmas Tree
DETROIT (WWJ) - It's one of the most recognizable signs that the Holidays are here -- the annual lighting of Detroit's official Christmas tree.
WWJ's Vickie Thomas reports the evening of entertainment begins at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Campus Martius Park, with a tree lighting ceremony beginning at 8 p.m. The 60-foot Norway Spruce tree, a gift from the Kettunen Center -- a Michigan 4-H Foundation near Cadillac, will sit atop the Woodward Fountain throughout the end of the year.
This year's event includes live music, ice-skating shows featuring national and international skating medalists Isabella Tobias and Deividas Stagniunas, a special appearance by Olympic Skating Champions Meryl Davis and Charlie White, and seasonal family activities including the Red Kettle Bounce House and photos with Santa.
Also, new this year is Christmas WonderFest, a 10-day indoor-outdoor holiday market with specialty gifts and decorations, carnival rides and the Detroit Hofbrau Charity Beer Garden.
