Detroit Prep Football Star Fatally Shot On Street

DETROIT (AP) - Fans and players paused before kickoff to honor a star high school football player in Detroit who was fatally shot two days before the first game.

Allantae Powell was killed Wednesday night while standing at a street intersection. Police are investigating.

Powell was a student at Detroit's Osborn High School. Football coach George Coker tells The Detroit News that he was the "heart and soul" of the team, a leader who played running back and linebacker.

Coker says the Osborn team is relying on prayer to deal with grief. Former quarterback Tracy Harris says Powell had scholarship offers and was talking to Big Ten schools. Osborn lost the game Friday to River Rouge, 33-6.

An Osborn basketball player, Perry Long, was killed about a month ago.
