Detroit Police To Return To 8-Hour Shifts
DETROIT (WWJ) - After a year of having police work 12-hour shifts, the Detroit Police Department will revert back to eight-hour workdays next month.
In a statement posed to the department's Facebook page on Tuesday, Police Chief James Craig said he's making the change after consulting with the police unions.
The change will go into effect October 14.
The longer workdays began in August of last year by order of former Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbe, who said such workdays were common for cops across the country.
The 12-hour shifts were unpopular among many Detroit police officers who thought they deserved — and did not receive — overtime compensation.
Craig said those who want to work longer hours, 10-hour shifts, will have a chance to apply for that assignment.
He said further details on the changes to shift schedules would be released at a later time.
