Detroit Police To Demonstrate Gunshot 'Detection' System
DETROIT (WWJ) - The Detroit Police Department isn't giving up its push for new technology to help find out where shootings take place.
Chief Ralph Godbee and other officers on Friday will be showing off a new Shot Spotter system that Mayor Bing wants approved and implemented. The chief said the new system will cut down on the time it takes officers to respond to gunfire.
City Council members rejected a $26-million contract last week.
Dozens of U.S. cities already use the technology. Godbee said the news system should be used in neighborhoods where most shootings occur.
The Department says they have about 1,000 fewer officers than it had six years ago, adding that officers responded to approximately 22,000 - 911 emergency calls related to gunfire in 2010.
Godbee said federal forfeiture dollars and grant money would cover the cost of implementing the system.
