Detroit Police Search For Missing Baby Girl
UPDATE: 8/20/11 Evelyn has been found.
DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit Police are searching for a missing 4-month-old girl who disappeared during a custody hearing. However, no Amber Alert has been issued yet for Evelyn Daniel.
As WWJ's Mike Campbell reports, there's a dispute between the families of the girl's father and mother.
Last week, the girl's father, Damon Daniel, allegedly shot and killed the girl's mother, 26-year-old Ebony Gaines. The Wayne County Prosecutor refused to press charges, saying the shooting was in self-defense, which Gaines' family disputes.
A judge had just ruled that the baby should be returned to her father, Damon Daniel, the same man who killed her mother.
A fight erupted during Thursday's custody hearing and when the judge ordered Daniel full custody and the mother's family to turn over Evelyn, they said they didn't know where the baby was. Now police are trying to find her.
Detroit police have reviewed a surveillance tape from the court, but they're not saying if it has given them any clues as to who walked away with the girl. Daniel has filed a kidnapping complaint with police.
Anyone with information on Evelyn's whereabouts is asked to contact the Detroit Police Department at 313-267-4600 or call the DPD tip line at 313-596-2313.
