Detroit Police Investigate Fatal Hit-And-Run
DETROIT (WWJ) - The Detroit Police Fatal Unit is investigating an early morning hit and run accident that claimed the lives of two men.
The accident happened Saturday around 2:30 a.m. on Gratiot Avenue and Russell Street, near the I-75 and I-375 interchange. Police say the men were discovered lying in the street, unresponsive. They were declared dead at the scene.
Police say it appears the men were crossing the road when they were struck by a small black vehicle that fled the scene.
Reports identify one of the victims as the "Eat 'Em Up Tigers" guy, who is well-known by locals to stand outside of home games at Comerica Park and pump up fans coming to and from the ballpark. The beloved Tigers supporter would famously hold his change cup in an over-sized foam hand while shouting the infectious chant, "Eat 'em up Tigers, Eat 'em up."
Police, however, said they could not confirm the victims' identities. Sgt. Eren Stephens would only say that both victims are black males.
Anyone who may have information on the incident is urged to contact Detroit Police at 313-596-1462 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
