Woman Fatally Shot, Child Injured By Robbers Dressed As Cops

DETROIT (WWJ) - A group of armed men dressed as fake police officers broke into a home on Detroit's west side and began firing shots, killing a woman and injuring a child.

Police say the shooting happened around 6 a.m. Thursday in the 1400 block of Marlowe, near Hubble and Fenkell streets.

According to police, a 35-year-old woman was killed and her 12-year-old sister was shot multiple times. The girl was rushed to Children's Hospital, where she was last listed in temporary-serious condition.

Four other females, ages six to 22, living in the house were uninjured.

Police say they are now looking for three suspects who were possibly involved.

One resident, who did not want to be identified, said it's not unusual to hear gunfire in the neighborhood, but knowing people are lurking around impersonating police officers is far scarier.

"You don't want nobody knocking at your door pretending to be the cops. If you don't answer, you're worried about them kicking your door down. And then it's really not even the police, it's somebody just on some crap like what happened down there. It's a sad situation," he said.

This is the second incident in one week involving people masquerading as police officers in Detroit.

On Monday, a Michigan State Police trooper was shot while pursuing a group of men who were posing as police officers, pulling cars over and robbing drivers. In that case, police were able to make two arrests, although they believe there were more suspects who got away. The trooper is expected to recover.

Police say both incidents remain under investigation.

Anyone who may have information on either incident is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP. You can also submit a tip online at www.1800speakup.org, or text "CSM" and your tip to CRIMES (274637).
