Detroit Police Commander Demoted To Lieutenant
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A Detroit police commander has been demoted following claims of inappropriate conduct with a female officer.
Mayor Dave Bing's office said Tuesday that James Moore was returned to the rank of lieutenant, effective the previous day.
Moore joined the department in 1978 and was appointed commander in 2007.
Police interim chief Chester Logan said that "based on the seriousness" of the allegations, Moore's role as commander "was compromised in the police department and the community."
The Detroit Free Press reported the alleged incident involved an act of domestic violence that occurred at a party store with a female subordinate. The incident was reportedly caught on surveillance videotape.
Bing said he's pledging to "eliminate improper behavior in the police department and all city of Detroit departments." He earlier said it's time to write an official city policy against fraternizing with subordinates or co-workers.
It's the second scandal to rock the Detroit Police Department in recent weeks.
Ralph Godbee retired earlier this month from his $140,400-a-year post as the city's police chief after a subordinate revealed she had a sexual relationship with him. Godbee was chief for two years.
