Detroit Police Chief To Announce New Leadership Team

DETROIT (WWJ) - Is there about to be a shakeup among Detroit's police ranks? Police Chief James Craig says he will announce this week who he's tapping to join his team.

"We're putting together a dynamic leadership team in the Detroit Police Department, Craig told WWJ's City Beat Reporter Vickie Thomas. "We're gonna unveil that in the coming days, so we're excited. We've got police officers out on the ground that are doing phenomenal work."

Craig went on to say that the police offers he's looking to promote must have passion for the job and for the people they work with.

"I wanna make sure the people that sit in those seats - particularly the captains who're running the precincts in the neighborhoods - they must be passionate about making a difference. I'm talking about quality of life issues, I'm talking about reducing violent crime; those things are critical. The second part is they gotta love cops; they've gotta support the cops ... and if they don't support that mindset, they're not gonna work on my team."

In the meantime, is he getting any push back for some of the changes he's implementing?

"Well push if you will, but this is just simply business, and I'm about the people's business," Craig said. "And if you don't like the people, then you're pushing the people. That's exactly how I see it."

Count on WWJ Newsradio 950 and CBS Detroit.com to provide details on those changes as soon as they are announced.
