Detroit Police Search For 2-Year Old Girl

DETROIT (WWJ) - An Amber Alert has been issued and a frantic search is under way in Detroit after a carjacking suspect allegedly took off with a little girl inside the vehicle.

Detroit police told WWJ Newsradio 950 they are combing the area for 2-year-old Bianca Jones and the carjacker after locating the missing vehicle on East Grand Boulevard and I-75.  A sketch of the suspect was released late Friday.

Police say that, according to the girl's parents, the silver Mercury Grand Marquis was stolen from Jones' father at gunpoint at around 10 a.m. Friday at Custer and Brush Street in Detroit. It was not immediately known whether or not the suspect knew the toddler was inside.

Police said the child may have been wearing a purple jacket and pink tights. Her hair is in braids.

Police Chief Ralph Godbee told reporters they're doing everything possible to find the child.

"We have our K-9s out, our mounted unit. I want to thank Special Agent in Charge of the Detroit Field Office of the FBI, Andrew Arena. We have our violent crimes task force out," said Godbee.

"We have every available resource out, making sure that we ... dot every 'i,' cross every 't,' search every home, talk to every individual, retrace the steps from the start of the day to make sure that we bring this young lady home safely," he said.

WWJ's Pat Sweeting asked Godbee if he believes the girl's parents' story.

"I'm not giving any credence to anything except the fact that we're compiling information. We're gonna leave no stone unturned. We're going to follow every investigative lead. We're going to vigorously challenge anything that's given to us," he said.

Detroit police said Jones was allegedly abducted by a 25-30 year old black male, 6 foot tall, 190 pounds, with some facial hair and a medium skin tone. He was last seen wearing a brown and black baseball style cap, black coat and dark pants. A hand gun was seen by a witness.

The suspect was seen traveling northbound on John R near East Grand Blvd. in a small red passenger car --- a second vehicle reported to be involved in the carjacking.

Anyone with information on the alleged victim, abductor or vehicle, is asked to immediately call 911 or the Detroit Police Department at 313-596-2260.
