Detroit Boy Who Allegedly Shot Mom During Argument Taken Into Custody After 15 Hour Manhunt
DETROIT (WWJ) - The manhunt for a 14-year-old Detroit boy who allegedly shot his mother during an argument has ended after 15 hours.
Police say the boy was arrested without incident in the area of Appoline and Keeler streets just after 11 a.m. Friday. He was found outside in the open by officers following up on leads. The arrest came about an hour after family members made a public plea for the boy to turn himself in.
Police had been searching for the teen since around 8 p.m. Thursday, after he allegedly shot his 38-year-old mother at their home, located in the 15000 block of Wisconsin, in a west side neighborhood near the Lodge Freeway and Wyoming Avenue.
According to police, the woman had a disagreement with her son -- after which he got a firearm and fired shots, striking his mother several times. She was taken to Sinai-Grace Hospital where her condition was last upgraded to temporary-serious condition.
While searching through vacant homes near Stoepel and Pilgrim Friday, officers arrested a 16-year-old suspect who is thought to have been helping the boy evade capture. Further information on that suspect, who was armed with two guns, has not yet been released. He's also not cooperating with police.
"We don't know if they're the weapons that were used in the shooting," Asst. Police Chief Steve Dolunt told WWJ's Mike Campbell. "He's a person of interest. We do not believe he was involved in the shooting, however we believe he was with the individual after the shooting."
Michigan State Police assisted in the search, providing K-9 units and a helicopter. Police had warned residents in the area to use caution, because the boy was considered armed and dangerous.
It's unclear what charges the teens may be facing. An investigation is ongoing.
