Detroit Police Academy Celebrates 100 Years
DETROIT (WWJ) - The Detroit Police Academy is 100 years old.
"It starts right here. This is ground zero. A hundred years is quite an accomplishment, and if you think about the history of the people that have come through this training staff and the history of the training staff that has been here, we're tremendously blessed to be able to stand here," Chief Ralph Godbee said, Friday, during a ceremony marking the anniversary
Detroit's police force is currently at a low of 2,900 officers. Godbee said he hopes to soon add 50 new recruits to the academy.
"Logistically we have to do some final testing -- fitness testing, psychological screening and some medical testing, but extensively we have approximately we have 50 candidates that will be ready to go in a very weeks," said Godbee.
Detroit's first police Academy opened on June 26, 1911 in the gymnasium of Central High School.
